How to Troubleshoot the HP ePrint Job Fails to Print Error

HP ePrint allows users to print from a location with access to the internet. A print job is sent via email using their HP printer email address. In case it does not print, check the internet connection for the device and printing requirements.

Check the Status of the Printer

To receive an ePrint job, the printer should be turned on and connected to the web.

  • Turn off the printer and turn it on to clear any existing issues.
  • Take a test print from a device on the exact local network. In case a connection error is displayed or if the printer device is not found, then there is an issue with the network connection.
  • Ensure Web Services in the printer is enabled.
    • If you are using an HP printer with LCD or touch display, touch on the ePrint icon and touch on Else, go to the menu Web Services under Wireless Settings or Network Setup. If the Web Services status is displayed with instructions to enable it, then follow them.
    • If you are using a printer without an LCD or touch display, print a self-test or network configuration page to get its IP address. Open a browser, type the printer IP address in its address bar, and press the Enter In case a website security certificate is displayed in the browser, then click on Continue. This then opens Embedded Web Server information page.
    • Click on the tab Web Services. In case the Web Services Summary web page is displayed, then it is already enabled. However, if the Web Services Setup web page is not listed, then click on Continue, and select Enable or Turn On.
    • Follow the instructions on the screen to enable the Web Services. Then, send a document or an ePrint job. In case the issue persists, then proceed to the next HP wireless printer troubleshooting step.

Check Print Job Requirements and ePrint Email

Confirm the ePrint job is configured correctly and the email attachment file type is supported.

  • Confirm the below ePrint email requirements
    • Enter the printer email address in the field ‘To’. Multiple email addresses might end up in cancelling the print job.
    • Add some text in the field ‘Subject’. Note that leaving the subject field blank might also cancel it.
    • Attach no more than ten items to the e Else, ensure the email’s total size, comprising attachments, is 10 megabyte or less.
  • Confirm the attached file type is compatible
    • Photograph files should be JPG, BMP, GIF, PNG, or TIFF. The photos should have a vertical and horizontal resolution of hundred pixels or higher.
    • Documents should be TXT, HTML, PDF, PowerPoint, MS Word, or Excel. Also, note ePrint cannot print encrypted, digital signed or password protected files or documents.
  • Confirm the email account has access to ePrint.
  • Confirm the settings of ePrint match the print job preferences
    • Print settings by default: The ePrint prints one-sided color documents in the exact orientation as the actual document. A document can be printed on an A4 paper or letter, and a photo can be printed on a 4 x 6 inches paper.

Resolve the Network Connection for the Printer

Fix common HP printer problems that prevent the device from connecting to the local network.

  • Ensure the wireless signal of the printer is on, and it connects to the exact network as the mobile device or computer. Some HP printers have a Wi-Fi icon with a blue light on their control panel. Ensure the said light on the printer is not blinking but on.
  • Many printers of HP have a wireless configuration wizard in their control panel Wireless Settings or Network Use the said wizard to connect the HP printer to the office network.
  • Move the computer and printer closer to the Wi-Fi router, but no more than 1.8 meters. The wireless signal can be weak at a greater distance. Also, position the computer and printer so that a metal object emitting radio signal does not interfere with the Wi-Fi signal.
  • Restart the router. For assistance with that, check in the router’s user manual, or contact your internet provider or the network administrator.
  • Check the router’s band setting as well. Several routers can function in both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands, but not all printers of HP support them. Ensure the 2.4 GHz router band is turned on and broadcasting. In case the wireless router broadcasts separate SSIDs for each band, then connect the printer to the respective 2.4 GHz band network name.
  • Firewall might prevent the wireless printer from accessing the system. Set up or change the firewall’s setting to make it allow wireless printing.
  • The printer can also bypass automatic IP address assigned by DHCP. Instead, use a valid IP address for use on the local network.

How to Fix Issues Printing to an HP LaserJet Pro Printer via AirPrint

If you come across any issues while printing from an Apple device connected to a network to an HP LaserJet Pro model printer using the AirPrint feature, then try the following troubleshooting steps.

Check if your Devices or Applications are Compatible with AirPrint

Ensure your printer and Apple device is compatible with the AirPrint feature. Not all previous iOS or macOS versions are compatible with the feature. Also, ensure an app in your device can be used with it.

Check your Device, Printer, and Wireless Connections

To use the AirPrint feature, your printer should be connected to the exact Wi-Fi network subnet as your compatible Apple device (a compatible laptop can be connected either wirelessly or even to an Ethernet or a wired network). Still, if you cannot print something to a local printer using the feature, check your printer, device and wireless connections.

  • Even after you turn it on, a printer can take some time to join a wireless network; so wait for some time and ensure that it is connected to the network prior to printing.
  • Ensure there is paper in your printer’s paper tray and that its toner is not empty.
  • Ensure there are no error messages on your printer’s control panel. If you see one, then skip to the section for HP wireless printer troubleshooting.

Update the Firmware of your Printer if Required

Some older HP printers necessitate the firmware update to allow compatibility with AirPrint. Check if your printer model requires that. If it does not need the update, then proceed to the next step.

Check AirPrint Settings in Embedded Web Server

The feature uses the zero-configuration networking of Apple titled “Bonjour” to automatically discover a printer over a local Wi-Fi network. To ensure your printer is configured for it, follow the steps mentioned below.

Note that to access the Embedded Web Server, your Apple system and your HP printer should be connected to the internet and that the connection is always ON in type.

  • Open a compatible browser and enter your printer’s host name or IP address in the URL or address field to open Embedded Web Server.
  • Click on the tab titled Networking, and click on Wireless Direct Setup.

  • Type your printer’s name for use with AirPrint in the field titled Wireless Direct Printing Name (SSID), and click on Apply.

HP Wireless Printer Troubleshooting

If you receive an error message ‘Printer is not connected’, then ensure there are no issues with your Wi-Fi network. If you are yet to install your printer on the network, then search for a how-to guide on that on your user manual or HP website.

If you see an error that suggests your printer is not found, no printers found or wireless printer offline issue when printing from an iOS device to the AirPrint-compatible printer, try the below solutions in the exact order.

  • Ensure your printer firmware is up to date, turn off and turn on your iOS device, disable Bluetooth feature, and then retry printing with AirPrint.
  • Check connectivity: Use the option Wireless Menu from the control panel of your printer; OR from the control panel of your printer, open How to connect and ensure the AirPrint name of your printer is the exact one chosen to print to. Now use the WPS button on the Wi-Fi router, and ensure that your iOS device and printer are on the same network. Also, move your device as near to your router as possible.
  • Turn off and turn your iOS device, router and printer. Wait for five minutes and turn them back on.
  • Ensure your wireless router can forward the Bonjour packets, then turn off and turn on your iOS device. Note that the said packets allow your devices to find each other automatically by using multicast DNS service records. If your router forwards the same, no need to enter IP address in order to search for your device.
    • Check router manufacturer’s instructions on how to forward the Bonjour packets.
    • Turn on the feature in your device that allows forwarding of the same.
    • Turn off and turn on your iOS device.
  • Try to print from a different device and reset your printer. For instructions on how to reset it, check in its user manual.
  • Update your router with the latest firmware and retry printing. For instructions on that, you can check on your router manufacturer or its user manual.

Basic Steps to Troubleshoot HP Wireless Printer Shown as Offline

If an HP printer is connected to a wireless network, and the connection drops while printing, its status will be listed as offline on the PC. However, you can follow the basic troubleshooting steps for HP printer not connecting issue and make optimal use of its wireless capabilities.

Reboot the PC, Printer, and Wireless Router

If you are downloading something on the computer, stop it prior to proceeding with the below steps:

  • Turn off the Wi-Fi router by unplugging its power cord or pressing its power button.
  • Shut down the printer, and disconnect its Ethernet or USB cables.
  • Exit all running programs on the PC, and shut it down.
  • Turn on the router, and wait for its activity light to show connected status.
  • Turn the printer back on, followed by the system.

In case the wireless connection is still dropping, move on to the next step.

Change the Name of Wireless Network

Changing the SSID of Wi-Fi network that is used to connect to the printer might resolve the HP printer not connecting to the device problem. If you have several routers with the same SSID, changing one to make routers identifiable will fix the issue due to wrong wireless connection or drops in the connection.

Note that after altering the wireless network name, you should reconnect compatible devices or a computer to the right network as the printer was connected to.

  • If your printer has a basic control panel with buttons, press on the Wi-Fi router’s WPS button when the wireless light blinks on the printer, and wait for it to establish a new connection to the network.
