How to Clean a Printer’s Printhead

Printheads clog as nozzles get blocked. Knowing the reasons for clogged printheads can also help you do the necessary things to keep them from happening. If this happens, your printer won’t print whatever you send to it.

Printhead Cleaning Cycles

Check nozzles and run printhead cleaning cycles with the menu on the printer before opening the device and cleaning it manually.

Epson® printer models have a quite efficient cleaning cycle, which will often clear out nozzles in a cycle or two. Keep in mind that newer model printers feature longer cycles which use more ink each time you do it. Here is the way to get started with this.

  • Before doing anything else, ensure the printer is not showing errors on its LCD screen.
  • Then, hit the Home button, choose Setup and select Maintenance.
  • Choose Printhead Nozzle Check
  • The device will present a page with colored grids that are designed to show which nozzles are not blocked and which ones are.
  • If there are no gaps, then select Done.
  • However, if a few lines are faint or there are gaps, then choose Clean the printhead option and proceed.

Do not turn off the printer in the course of a cleaning cycle, or else it can cause damage to the device.

When you run a cleaning cycle, you have to take a test print to check the print quality. If you run it twice or thrice, and if the quality thereof has not improved, then let it rest for many hours, as recommended by Epson®. Then, go through a cycle again and check to see if this makes the quality better.

Here are some ways to manually clean the printhead. These are common methods which work on the majority of Epson® inkjet models.

Clean Sponges of Your Printer with Distilled Water

  • Turn your printer off and open its top. Inside the unit, you should see the printhead assembly.
  • When it is not printing, a plastic lever in the printer will pop up. Search for that lever, to the left side of the assembly. Once you spot it, move the lever forward and down in order to release your printhead, and push the printhead assembly to the right side. It may move only an inch or thereabouts initially, but when pushed to a stop position, it clicks. This then releases the printhead assembly, and then you can push the assembly to the side.
  • You should then see sponges, storing ink from cartridges in the printhead carriage. With a plastic syringe or an eyedropper, saturate sponges preferably with distilled water.
  • Move the printhead assembly back over sponges.
  • Allow the distilled water to set for a minimum of 15 minutes. Think about letting your printer soak overnight for the best possible results.
  • Print around eight pages with dense images and text until your printouts come out crisp and clean. If you are not getting fine results, then think about proceeding to the subsequent step in the printhead cleaning process.

Troubleshooting Tips

Distilled Water in the Ink Port

Detach the cartridges from the carriage.

  • With cartridges detached, you will see cone-shaped indents that take ink from the former to the printhead. Those are ink ports, and the device should have one port for each black/color cartridge.
  • With an eyedropper or syringe, put two drops of the water into the port which may be plugged.
  • Replace the cartridges; wait for the device to set up your new ones. If water dripped from its printhead, then wipe it up using a paper towel.
  • Once you are done with that, print about eight pages of images and text to check clarity. If you are not getting good results even then, try the next method.

Clean the Printhead with the Paper Towel

  • Turn off your printer
  • Tear one sheet of the towel in half, then fold it along the length until it is around one-half inch wide.
  • Then, open the top portion of the printer, and search for a roller transporting the paper via the system where its printhead runs over while printing.
  • Fix the towel to the printer roller using tape and apply many drops of distilled water around the center of the paper item.
  • Move the assembly over the towel and allow it to rest for 15 minutes at the least. Allow adequate time for the ink upon the printhead to start to dissolve. Eventually, you will spot a pool of ink on the towel – this is a combination of multiple colors.
  • Repeat with the new damp paper items until you begin to see separate colors from each port. You might just have to repeat the procedure many times to get good results.
  • Finally, put the assembly back in its place, and turn on your printer.
  • Print many pages to ensure each of the ink ports are cleared.

How to Connect Your Printer to a Wireless Network

Lots of printers come with Wi-Fi, meaning you can print wirelessly from your desktop PC, laptop, smart phone or tablet. You do not need to be placed in the same building or room to take printouts from a wireless device.   • Alternatively, you can use the Open Print Queue feature located in the Print and Fax pane of Mac OS X System Preferences. Select the print job enqueued in the list, and get rid of the same.
  • Remove the printer itself by choosing System Preferences once more, and then Print and Fax. In case the padlock icon in the window is not locked, click on it, and enter your admin login credentials.

How to Resolve Printing Issues Related to Word Documents

You might come across certain issues with your printer while working on a Word document, such as an error message saying, “Printer Not Responding”. Take a Printout of Another Document on MS Word

Do this as a basic test. If you are unable to print a certain page on Word, you can try to print another page. This will confirm whether the issue is pertaining to a single document or template in MS Word, or whether your printer has run into a technical problem.

For that, open the Word processing software and click the Office Button on the top left corner. Choose New in the resulting menu to open the New Document pop up box. Now select Blank Document in the window and click Create.

Enter some random text in the file to print, and use the Ctrl + S shortcut key combination to save the file on your computer. After you have saved the file, click on the Office Button again, and select Print from the dropdown menu. Alternatively, you can use the Ctrl + P shortcut keys to open the Print command box.

Select the name of the printer in the pop up window and click OK to print the document. If the test print is successful, it means that the MS Word template you used earlier was faulty. So you will have to create a new custom template in order to fix the printing problems. However, you can also try renaming the existing template to see if resolves the printer not responding error.

How to Rename an MS Word Template

  • Exit Microsoft Word, and click on the Start button on the bottom left corner of the desktop screen to open the Start Menu. Type Normal.dotm in the search box.
  • If you cannot find Normal.dotm in the search results, enter %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates in the Start Menu search box and press Enter.
  • A window will open on the screen with the Normal.dotm template in it. If you see the template with an exclamation mark, it confirms that there is some issue with the Normal.dotm template. Right click on it, click on Rename, and change the extension from .dotm to .old

Once you are finished with these steps, create a new document following the previously mentioned steps, and take a test print again. You should be able to take the printouts successfully now. However, note that you may not be able to print the documents made using other templates. So you also need to create a new template and set that as default.

Creating a New Custom Template

  • Open Word and click on the Office Button on the top left corner. Choose New in the dropdown, select Blank Document, and click Create. You can enter any basic data that you want to keep as a template, or leave the file blank.
  • Now click on the Office Button once again, and select Save As from the resulting menu. Click on Word Template in the context menu, and name the file as NewTemplate.
  • Select Local Disk (C:)/Users and open the folder for your computer user name. now go to AppData/Roaming/Microsoft and open the Templates Set this as the location to save your NewTemplate file.
  • When done, open a MS Word document and click on the Developer tab on the top ribbon menu. If you do not see the same in MS Word ribbon, click on the Office Button, select Word Options, and put a tick mark against Show Developer tab in the Ribbon
  • Select Document Template in the Developer tab, and click on the Attach button near the Document template Select NewTemplate.dotm from the pop up box and click Open, followed by OK, to set the template as default.

How to Print a Document with Secure Print Assistance in Windows

The secure print is a capability, which lets you send documents to a printer, and they will be printed only when you enter a four-digit PIN number or Password into the printer. Additional functionality is obtained by adding an optional Hard Disk Drive or a Compact Flash memory to a printer.

The PIN can be specified when you submit a print job or document from your computer.

A Printer without Optional HDD or Compact Flash Memory

Documents or print jobs remain in the memory of your printer until any of the following things occur:

  • The printer is turned or switched off
  • The secure print job is completed. On the grounds of security, as soon as your document is printed with the PIN, the print job is removed from the memory of the device.

Before using the secure print option with your printer’s memory, you have to format it.

A Printer with an Optional HDD or Compact Flash Memory

Print jobs remain the memory of the device until either any of the below things occur:

  • The device is turned off
  • The secure document, which you send to it, is printed. For security, as soon as the four-digit code is entered and your print job is finished, the document is deleted from its memory.

Before using the secure printing option with an optional Compact Flash memory or an HDD, you have to format either.

Steps to Use Secure Print

Firstly, send your document to your printer. For that, you can use the following steps.

  • Open a word processor program, click on its File menu, and select the option titled Print. This reveals the Print dialog box.
  • In the dialog box, click on the Properties
  • You will see another printer-related dialog box. In it, click on the Advanced tab, and select Device Options Then, you should be able to see a new set of options, including the Secure Print.
  • Click on the Secure Print radio button to activate the option. Then, a small window appears prompting you to specify the Password.
  • Key in the Password or PIN that consists of four characters or digits, and click on the OK
  • Then, it will return to the Properties dialog box. In it, click on the OK and Apply buttons for confirmation.
  • It will then return to the Print dialog box. Click on its OK button, and the document will be sent to your printer. However, as it is a “Secure” print job, it will be completed until you manually enter the PIN on the front panel of your printer.

Steps to Print the Document

  • Press the Reprint button on your printer’s LCD.
  • The display color will then change, and you will also see a message that suggests that the file is secured.

  • Then, the username will be displayed on its front panel. Note that in case there is more than a printer user, you may need to press either the plus arrow key or the minus arrow key until you see the username information.
  • Press the SET button to choose your username.
  • Then, a list of all secure documents that are submitted by you will be displayed. In case there is more than a document, use any of the above-mentioned arrow keys in order to scroll through print jobs.
  • Press the SET button in order to select the document you need to print.
  • The LCD of your printer will show “PASS NO=0000,” which is when you have to enter the PIN or password. It is the same as the one specified earlier by you. In order to enter it, use both the arrow keys along with the SET For instance, in case your PIN is “4567”, press the plus key until the digit changes to “4”, press the SET button, then enter the second digit by pressing the plus button twice, and press the SET button again. Repeat this until all digits are specified.
  • In case the password entered by you is correct, it will display “COPIES = 1”. At this point, specify the number of print copies you want by pressing the above-mentioned arrow keys, and press the button SET.
  • The LCD color will change and your print job will be completed.
  • Also, note that the print job will be removed from the memory of the device when it is printed for security reasons.
